Structural Integration

Structural Integration (SI) is the culmination of a body of work developed by Ida Pauline Rolf – a what is structural integrationtrue Renaissance woman who changed the field of bodywork and the way we as practitioners and clients perceive ourselves, perhaps, forever. Rolf received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Columbia University in 1920, was a research associate in organic chemistry at the Rockefeller Institute for 12 years, and studied mathematics and atomic physics at Swiss Technical University in Zurich, Switzerland, augmented with studies in homeopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic, philosophy, and yoga.

Her study of homeopathy taught her what is referred to as the “law of cure” or the sequence of “unraveling” the problem from the present to its origin.

Osteopathy contributed to her early understanding of the body and the view of handling the body through manipulation of its tissues and structures.

Yoga contributed to the belief that the body needed to be lengthened by increasing the space at bony interfaces (joint). Bodies need to lengthen and be balanced and a balanced body will give rise to a better human being.

Another important concept that came in her early work was to move the soft tissue toward a place where it really belongs. (Spatial and Positional relationships in the body)

By the 1950’s she had established her method of teaching her approach or “recipe.” The Rolf Method of Structural Integration is a 10 session long process and forms the basis for Structura’s advanced Structural Integration therapy.

Ida was not interested in curing symptoms; she was after bigger game. She wanted nothing less than to create new, better human beings. The ills would cure themselves; the symptoms would melt as the organisms became balanced.

Structural Integration is a way of restructuring the physical body. Structural Integration is a system that induces change toward an ordered pattern around the gravitational field. In general, it is a basic ten-hour cycle of treatment that balances myofascial relationships in the body.
